This list of 50 items was used by the compiler to illustrate genetic relationship between Sumatran languages. It is thus one of the earliest lists we could find in which «universal concepts» are used as a heuristic for the proof of genetic relationship between languages. The compiler himself labels the list as «a list of fifty words; of universal use from the nature of the ideas they express» (Marsden 1782).
